How to Upgrade Big-IP F5 load balancer

Updated: Jan 21

We can follow the steps below:

First, we need to verify the current version and take a backup of the F5. Also, make sure both HA devices are synced with each other.

I. Preparation Work

  1. Check the Current Version

To check your current version, log in to the F5 Admin GUI -> System -> General Properties.

  1. Backup F5 Configuration

Log in to the F5 GUI -> System -> Archive -> Click on "Create", which will create a backup of the current configuration. Click on the "Download" link next to the backup.

Take backup though CLI -

  1. Download F5 Image from F5 Support Portal

Download the F5 image from the F5 Support Portal. Before downloading the image, verify with F5 TAC to ensure that the version you are upgrading to supports your hardware.

Additionally, if you are upgrading to a major version, you will need to sync the license. For minor version upgrades (e.g., from 15.1.2.1.0 to 15.3.1.x), you do not need to upgrade the license, as both versions belong to the same major version (15). However, for safety, it is recommended to verify this with F5 TAC.

  1. Upload Image (ISO and MD5) to F5

Log in to the F5 UI -> System -> Software Management -> Image List -> Import.Click on "Choose File" and select the image file (e.g., BIGIP-15.1.2.0.iso).Click on the "Import" button.

After completing the full upload, you will see a new software in Software Management

Now Select software and install -

This is very important point, make sure you can select disk that is not use by you current image , otherwise if something fail you can not restore .
